Cambridge Major Appoints Uli Kazmaier as Scientific Advisor

Chiral Synthesis Expertise Adds to CML's Chemistry Toolbox

September 2, 2003 Germantown, WI USA: Cambridge Major Laboratories announces the appointment of Professor Uli Kazmaier from University of Saarland as Scientific Advisor. Professor Kazmaier’s knowledge and expertise in asymmetric synthesis will play a vital role in advancing Cambridge Major’s exploration and development of chiral compounds including amino acids and rare sugars for use in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients.

Professor Kazmaier’s research focuses on the development of new synthetic methodologies based on metal-assisted molecular rearrangements. In addition his research includes various asymmetric synthetic approaches including chelated ester enolates, ester enolate Claisen Rearrangements, Asymmetric Claisen Rearrangements, amino acid side-chain modifications, synthesis of Cyclopeptides, and synthesis of rare Azasugars as potential Glycosidase Inhibitors.

“I have known Uli for years and I am excited to have him join our technical team as an advisor. Professor Kazmaier’s expertise will significantly help us to expedite synthesis of a number of chiral compounds we are currently working on, and design/review new synthetic routes for some rare hetero sugars which have significant promise in various therapeutic areas”, said Dr. Michael Major, President and CEO of Cambridge Major. The addition of Professor Kazmaier underscores our commitment to scientific excellence, and also our desire to provide our life science customers with innovative, simplified less costly, and yet practical chemistry that works.”

Professor Kazmaier said, “ for more than 15 years I’ve known Dr. Michael Major, and this is an outstanding basis for a fruitful and innovative cooperation. It’s a pleasure to act as an Scientific Advisor at Cambridge Major Laboratories, and to bring expertise in the field of asymmetric synthesis, enantioselective catalysis and their application to the synthesis of drug candidates.”

Professor Kazmaier received his Ph.D. under Professor Schmidt from the University of Stuttgart focusing on the Asymmetric Synthesis of Amino Acids. He performed his post-doctoral studies with Professor Barry Trost, Stanford University, and his Inaugural Thesis at the University of Heidelberg, Germany in the lab of Prof. Helmchen on Asymmetric Synthesis and Palladium Assisted Rearrangements of Amino Acids. Currently Professor Kazmaier is Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Saarland, Saarbrucken, Germany.
